The Checklist to Avoid Forgetting Anything During Your Move

Where to start? As you glance around the home you’re leaving, the scope of the task can be overwhelming. Don’t stress— we’ve put together a checklist to guide you step by step to transform your move from chaos to calm.

Moving Checklist

8 to 6 Weeks Before the Move

  • Start Sorting Your Belongings: Decide what you want to keep, sell, donate, or recycle. For items you’re unsure about or don’t need immediately, consider a self-storage space.
  • Get Moving Quotes: Compare services and book your movers in advance.
  • Notify Your Landlord or Property Manager of Your Departure, if Necessary.
  • Reserve a Storage Space: If you need temporary storage for your belongings, contact us to book your self-storage unit.

Prepare an Inventory of Items to Move or Store.

  • 6 to 4 Weeks Before the Move
  • Handle Administrative Formalities: Plan for the cancellation and transfer of your subscriptions (electricity, water, internet, etc.).
  • Order Packing Supplies: Purchase boxes of various sizes, tape, bubble wrap, and markers for labeling.
  • Start Packing Non-Essential Items: Books, off-season clothes, decorative items, etc. Consider temporarily storing bulky items in a self-storage unit.
  • Donate or Sell Unused Items: If some items are no longer needed, organize a sale or make donations.

4 to 2 Weeks Before the Move

  • Continue Packing: Tackle the less frequently used rooms and pack boxes systematically (according to their destination rooms).
  • Label Each Box: Clearly indicate the contents and the room it should go to in your new home.
  • Arrange for the Moving of Bulky Items: If you need to store furniture or large appliances, plan their transport to one of our secure storage spaces.
  • Notify Administration of Your Change of Address: Inform the postal service for mail forwarding, the cantonal population office, and your local automobile service.
  • Update Your Subscriptions: Notify your energy, internet, and other service providers of your change of address.

2 Weeks Before the Move

  • Prepare Moving Boxes: Reserve some boxes for essential items you’ll need until the last moment (clothes, toiletries, etc.).
  • Clean Your New Home: If possible, do a general clean before your arrival to make settling in easier.
  • Confirm Date and Time with Movers: Ensure everything is in order and inform them of any items to be stored in self-storage, if necessary.

1 Week Before the Move

  • Finish Packing: Pack the last remaining items, leaving aside essentials for the final days.
  • Disassemble Furniture: Start disassembling furniture that can be dismantled while keeping necessary parts for the last few days.
  • Prepare a Survival Kit for Moving Day: Include toiletries, change of clothes, food, and drinks for moving day.

2 to 3 Days Before the Move

  • Confirm Details with Movers: Double-check the details of transport and temporary storage.
  • Clean the Old Home: If possible, start cleaning your old home to avoid doing it at the last minute.
  • Empty the Refrigerator and Freezer: Consume or donate remaining food and unplug appliances.

On Moving Day

  • Check Boxes: Ensure all your boxes are labeled and ready to be loaded onto the truck.
  • Give Instructions to Movers: Indicate which boxes go directly to the new home and which need to be stored temporarily.
  • Do a Final Walkthrough of the Old Home: Make sure nothing has been left behind and all windows and doors are securely closed.

After the Move

  • Check that Everything Arrived in Good Condition: Verify that your belongings have arrived safely at your new home or storage unit.
  • Unpack Gradually: Start with essential boxes and take your time to settle in. You can retrieve items from self-storage as needed.
  • Update Your Contacts: Inform friends, family, bank, and other organizations of your new address.
